cook one's own goose​

 

 

 

goose是“鹅”，用cook one's own goose表示“断送某人的计划或前途”，可能源自另一个短语kill the goose that lays the golden eggs(杀鸡取卵)。

例：

A promising young man may cook his own goose by mixing with bad guys.

有希望的年轻人如果跟坏人混在了一起，就会断送了自己的前途。

beat goose在口语中表示“双手插在腋下取暖”。也作beat the booby。

例：

Have you ever seen him beating goose?

你看到过他双手插在腋下取暖吗?

get the goose在俚语中表示“被喝倒彩”、“被嘘”。与此相反的是give the goose“作嘘声反对”、“喝倒彩”、“使加快速度”。

例：

The actress got the goose on the stage.

那位女演员在舞台被喝倒彩了。

  wild-goose chase

 

 

 

wild-goose chase字面意思就是“野鹅追逐”，其实是很难追到的，所以用来指“白费力”、“徒劳无益的追求”，跟我们常说的歇后语“竹篮打水一场空”近似。

例：

It turned out to be a wild-goose chase.

结果证明这只不过是一场徒劳。
