pie in the sky源于一首歌。1911年，歌曲“The rebel girl and the preacher and the slave”开始被大家广为传唱，这首歌意在讽刺当时的“救世军”国际基督教组织。
“救世军”提倡尘世受苦，认为只有这样才能进入天堂。所以，创作人就在歌中写道：牧师们每天晚上都要出门传教，告诉你什么是对什么是错，但你若问是否有吃的，他们就会用甜蜜的声音回答：等到你进入天国，一定会有吃的 You'll get pie in the sky when you die(等你死后你就会在天上得到馅饼);现在要工作、要祈祷。
所以pie in the sky渐渐被人们所接受，用来形容“空头支票”、“虚幻不能实现的空想”。
例：
His dream to become president is just a pie in the sky.
成为总统是他的黄粱美梦。
I don't believe the plan will succeed, it is just pie in the sky.
我不相信这个计划能成功，它根本无法实现。
pipe dream
18、19世纪的英国，上流社会吸食鸦片并不罕见。当时，pipe(烟斗)常被引申为“鸦片”，如短语on the pipe就很形象地形容了以“鸦片”为生的瘾君子，而pipe dream则用来比喻“鸦片上瘾者陷入幻觉时的状态”。大约在1895年左右，pipe dream正式进入英语词汇，不过在书面语中，pipe dream不再与鸦片有任何瓜葛，而是用来形容“白日梦”、“幻想”、“空想”。
例：
Otherwise, the drive for the four modernizations will become a pipe dream.
否则，搞四个现代化就会变成一句空话。
fool's paradise
源自莎士比亚的戏剧《罗米欧与朱丽叶》(Romeo and Juliet) : but first let me tell ye, if ye should lead her into a fool's paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behavior…(可是我要先明白地对您说一句，要是真像人家说的，您想骗她做一场春梦，那可真是一件顶坏的行为……)。
意思就是to be happy because you do not know or will not accept how bad a situation really is因为你不知道或是你不接受真实的糟糕的情况而发出的愉悦开心的状态，沉浸在虚幻的幸福之中
