① article最常用，指书籍、报刊上的文章。

The newspaper has a good article on gardening. 本报上有一篇谈园艺的佳作。

See the article printed in the Outlook for October 15. 请参阅10月15号《瞭望》杂志刊登的那篇文章。

② essay表示“论文，小品文，随笔”，指在学校作为作业而写的短文或短小的论述文。

I have to write an essay entitled “My Friend”. 我得写一篇题为“我的朋友”的文章。

③ paper表示“论文”，常指在学术刊物上发表或在学术会议上宣读的专题论文，也指学生的学期论文。

paper水平不如thesis高，篇幅也较短。

He is preparing a paper on world population for the meeting. 他正在为会议准备一篇关于世界人口的论文。

Her term paper was well received by the class. 她的学期论文受到班级好评。

④ thesis为一种综述性论文，是对某一专业的综合性论述，通过大量阅读专业书籍和杂志而写成，介于50～350页。

He wrote the doctor's thesis within two years. 他在两年里写了那篇博士论文。
