① cause意为“起因”，指造成某一事实或现象或直接导致某种结果的原因。

I don't know the cause and effect of it. 我不知道此事的前因后果。

② reason意为“理由”，指逻辑推理方面的理由或解释某些已发生的事的理由，给以通情达理、合乎逻辑的解释。

You have no reason to refuse her. 你没有理由拒绝她。

What was the reason for/of him being late？他迟到的原因是什么？

③ excuse指为免受指责和推卸责任而找的“借口，理由”。

He is always late，and always has an excuse. 他总是迟到，而且总有借口。

Too much work is no excuse for not studying. 工作太忙不能成为不学习的理由。
