① extend在表示空间上的延伸时主要指直线状的伸展，也指时间。

The river extends in an eastward direction. 这条河向东方延伸。

She extended her hand and shook hands with me. 她伸出手与我握手。

extend 还可用于指扩大事物的种类、影响或势力范围等。

② expand指扩大，扩张，强调“平面或立体”的伸展。

The river expands and forms a lake. 河流扩大而成为一个湖泊。

③ prolong常指时间延长，持续时间的拖长，超过了一般和正常的界线。

They prolonged/extended their visit by a few days. 他们把访问时间延长了几天。
