指示代词分单数（this/that）和复数（these/those）两种形式，它们既可作限定词又可做代词，例如：单数的determiner：This girl is Mary.单数的代词：This is Mary.复数的限定词：Those men are my teachers.复数的代词：Those are my teachers.

指示代词在作主语时，可指物也可指人，但作其他sentence constituents时只能指物，不能指人，例如：That is my teacher.在这里，that作主语，指人；He is going to marry this girl.在这里，this作限定词。但"He is going to marry this."是错误的，因为this作宾语时不能指人。而"I bought this."是正确的，因为this指物时，可以作宾语。
