Is it OK to fall asleep at the movies?(435 words)
By David Tang
To the editor:
While at a movie premiere at the London Film Festival,I was so bored by the feature’s drab content that I almost instantly fell asleep. Soon, however,my friend woke me up with a sharp pat on the head, sparking moderate ire on my part. Apparently, the director was sitting beside us. Do you think it impolite or improper to fall asleep at the movies? After all,if one is quiet, there is no disturbance to fellow movie-goers,and certainly no offence to the actors who are present merely as projections on the silver screen. According to my friend,if one is bored, one should resist the call of Morpheus and leave the theatre rather than comfortably rest in its chairs. What are your thoughts?

David Tang:
I often fall asleep in cinemas. My wife absolutely hates it because apparently I also start snoring when I drop off. She thinks my snoring is utterly embarrassing and unacceptable, and that out of consideration to others,I shouldn’t go to the cinema. But then you don’t seem to snore and so you won’t be chastised by my wife. For her, silent nodders are acceptable while loud ones are not.
So you could stay in your seat and enjoy the snooze, whereas I should stay at home lest I disturb others. And I would add that in your case it serves the director right for sitting next to you because he really ought to know first hand that his film has failed to hold your attention. Which probably means others are also dropping off.
Recently I went to watch a film called The Girl on the Train. She was merely a commuter, but seemed to be on a very long journey as all I saw for the first half hour was her face peering through the window with flashbacks of more of the same. Occasionally we would be treated to an aerial shot of the dirty moving train. Not only was it monotonous, but also pretentiously incomprehensible. Needless to say I fell asleep fairly soon.
Every time my wife jogged me awake,I seemed to be looking at the same sequence of a gaunt-looking girl looking out of a train window and would fall asleep again. By the time I’d agonised through the entire wretched film,I felt as exhausted as if I had been on the Trans-Siberian. The film was not exactly Agatha Christie’s 4.50 from Paddington. I wouldn’t even recommend it to a somnambulist because there is a danger they might lie down while somnambulating and never manage to get back to bed.
