James O’Neill, New York’s police commissioner, said 27-year-old Akayed Ullah suffered burns after the improvised explosive device he was carrying partially exploded at 7.20am. Three other people suffered minor injuries.

The Department of Homeland Security said the suspect came to the US in 2011 after presenting a passport displaying an F43 family immigrant visa. “The suspect is a lawful permanent sesident from Bangladesh who benefited from extended family chain migration,” said Tyler Houlton, a DHS spokesperson.

The New York Police Department said the explosion happened in a pedestrian tunnel that runs between the bus terminal and Times Square along 42nd Street. It is heavily used by commuters in the bustling Midtown section of the city.
