在西方，人们很少谈年龄这一敏感的问题。在西方人看来，“老”就意味着“不中用了”，“该退休了”，所以“old”也就成了他们忌用的词，而用“seasoned man”“elderly people”，“senior citizen”来代替。如果用“old”一词来表示称呼上了年纪的人，他们就会感到不快，觉得尊严受到损害。因此就用getting on years（年岁增长），advanced in age（高寿），senior citizens（年长的公民），past one's prime（过了鼎盛期）和reach one's golden age（进入黄金年华）等来替代老字。也就是说，询问西方国家女士的年龄是相当不礼貌的事，像“How old are you?”之类的表达是不宜在正式交际中出现的。
