I'm the daughter of chinese vietnamese refugees

我的父母刚来到这个国家时并没有太多的钱

my parents didn't come to this country with much

我的母亲工作时间很长 一人做多份工作

my mother she worked long hours and multiple jobs

为了确保我和妹妹们有获得最好的机会的可能

to make sure that my sisters and I had the best opportunities possible

这些老师激发了我的学习热情

those teachers instilled in me a passion for learning

我的父母坚信教育的作用

my family believed in education 

但他们并不了解学校的系统

but didn't understand the school systems

所以只能把我和妹妹的我未来交到老师的手里

so they trusted our teachers with my sister my future

尤其是自然科学

and particularly in science

那天的项目结束之后

after program that day

意识到我自己是多么的幸运

realizing that i was incredibly lucky to be where

激发和持续鞭策我去确保其他人

sparked and continues to drive me to ensure that others

无论他们的出身

regardless of background

都有机会实现梦想和充分释放潜能

can have their opportunity to reach their dreams and their full potential

有一天辅导员找我帮忙

one day a school counselor came to me

寻找一个缺课好几天的学生

looking for a student that had missed several days of school 

我去了操场

I stepped out and went to the playground

很快就找到她了

and found her immediately

她的两颗门牙断了

her two front teeth were broken 

所以觉得会很没面子被别人看到的话

and she was ashamed to be seen 

我明白了她不去上学的原因

I saw why she hadn't been to school

我内心充满疑惑的是

my heart and mind were flooded with questions 

她到底怎么了

what had happened to her

她受伤了吗

was she hurt 

他的牙齿被感染了吗

was her teeth infected

我能做些什么来防止这些发生

what could have I have done to prevent this

最后一个让我难受的是

that last question crushed me

问题非常简单

it the question is simply simple

但答案却如此复杂

but the answer is so complex

我没有解决的方法

I had no tools to tackle 

我们是否可以共同努力

can we all together work 

去治愈 预防 控制所有的疾病

to cure preventer manage all disease 

在我们孩子的有生之年

within our children's lifetime

马克和我都相信这是有可能的在我们孩子生活的那个年代

mark and I believe that this is possible within our children's lifetime

当然 做这个不能单靠我们自己

of course we can't do this alone 

因此我们现在

so today

我们和科学家 医生 工程师还有大学合作

we're partnering with scientists doctors engineers and universities 

来达到这个目标

to achieve this goal

对于这个项目

for this initiative

我们将投资超过30亿美元在未来十年中

we will be investing more than 3 billion dollars over the next decade

来完成我们共同的使命

to achieve our collective mission
