研究者们在2000名成年人中进行调查，发现一半以上的人在拼写常用词时有困难。这些词还包括“accommodate”、“questionnaire”和“rhythm”。“conscience”让很多英国人头疼，还有“occurrence”、“restaurant”和“guarantee”也很有挑战。在50个最难拼的日常用词中，还有“definite”、“separate”和“weird”。“appearance”、“queue”和“receive”也是让人大伤脑筋。
此项研究的结果强调普通人对拼写辅助的依赖程度，实验对象中的40%承认他们在日常生活的交流中完全依赖自动拼写更正技术。20%以上的人表示，如果不使用自动更正或拼写检查功能，而完全依靠自己拼单词，他们会感到不安。然而，拼写错误仍然很常见并且代价高昂，近25%的人有过在工作场合拼写错误而产生尴尬结果的经历。
