TUNE: GATHERING MULBERRIES

For miles and miles to homeless wilderness I go,

My forehead dotted with snow,

Through the Life-and-Death Pass.

Leaving my children, I’d be a savage, alas!

’Neath dark cloud o’er bamboos home-going cuckoos cry

Round Lychee Mountain high.

In thatched cot at leisure,

Who sounds the clappers, teaching young maidens with pleasure?
