George Herbert

赫伯特（George Herbert，1593-1633），英国十七世纪的重要诗人。做过教区牧师，为人宽厚、仁慈，充满活力。他的诗受多恩的影响，具有“玄学派”诗风，充满精神的痛苦和矛盾。《圣殿》是他最主要的作品，其中包括十四行诗、歌、赞美诗、挽诗、对话诗、离合诗等。他在这部诗作中用智性并充满情感的语言以及典雅优美的诗歌形式，表达了对上帝的热切期盼和他的内心灵魂与上帝之间的不稳定关系，反映了他心中的困惑、焦虑与不安。在艺术形式方面，他的诗歌富于音乐性和戏剧性。

可爱的白天呵，凉爽、光明、宁谧——

Sweet day, so cool, so calm , so bright,

正是苍天和大地的结婚仪式；

The bridal of the earth and sky:

今晚为你的灭亡露珠要哭泣，

The dew shall weep thy fall tonight,

因为你必然会死。

For thou must die.

可爱的玫瑰呵，色彩艳丽而热情，

Sweet rose, whose hue, angry and brave,

使那性急的观赏者拭泪不止，

Bids the rash gazer wipe his eye:

你始终在你的坟墓里生根，

Thy root is ever in its grave,

你也必然会死。

And thou must die.

可爱的春光呵，多的是晴天和玫瑰，

Sweet spring, full of sweet days and roses,

是一只藏满芬芳的宝物的箱子，

A box where sweets compacted lie;

我的歌说明你们都有结尾，

My music shows ye have your closes,

总之一切都会死。

And all must die.

只有那可爱又善良正直的心灵，

Only a sweet and virtuous soul,

有如圆熟的木材，永不败坏；

Like seasoned timber, never gives;

哪怕整个世界变成了灰烬，

But though the whole world turn to coal ,

它却依然存在。

Then chiefly lives.
