It is hard to make a good wood fire unless you've learned how to do it. The most important rule is to select the right wood. Dry wood is best. Don't cut down a healthy tree for firewood. Living trees have sap, which feels wet and doesn't burn easily. Dry wood which has been dead for a year or two burns most easily.
