辨 析：
原译有点叫人莫名其妙，那姑娘为什么要“在乘客之间”念书呀？（“念书”、“读书”一般指“上学”，所以应作“看书”。）满电梯的乘客，姑娘不照看电梯而自己看书，岂不是不负责任吗？
我们说，语言要尽量简略，但是要约定俗成，英语中的介词（前置词）常常能起到使句子简化的作用，between既表示空间上的关系，也可以表示时间上的关系。这里的between表示的恐怕是后者，即时间上的关系，而不是空间上的关系，意思是说：在没有乘客的时候，开电梯的姑娘就看看书。类似的例句又如：She modeled between roles. 意思是说“在没有演出的时候（字面意义为“在不担任角色的时候”），她客串当模特儿。”
between一词的翻译需要灵活，如：
