英语名词有数、格的变化，掌握它们才能在解题时对名词范围内的结构考题作分析、判断，得出正确的答案。
【例1】The school staff gathered to hear the president speak.

【分析】staff 是集合名词，明显地强调某组织或集合体的成员，动词应取复数形式，所以C项正确。类似的词还有：family, committee, police, cattle, audience, herd, crowd, troop, team等。
【例2】A large crowd expected at the football match.

【分析】crowd 是集合名词，强调一个整体，具有单数意义，根据题意，A项正确。
【例3】Economics, several courses of which I have taken thus far, to be difficult but useful for almost all students.

【分析】句中several courses of which I have taken thus far 是非限定性定语从句,其前后用逗号与主句分开。主句主语Economics是以 s 结尾的表示学科名称的名词, 在句中作单数第三人称看待, 因此应选C项, 以求句中主谓一致。英语中以 s 结尾表示学科名称的名词很多，如：mathematics，statistics，politics，physics，phonetics等。
【例4】Her sister works in college but I don’t know which one.

【分析】根据句意可以看出女子学院是泛指，不是特指，所以答案就在B、D选项中选一个，选哪一个，这就要按名词的所有格规则去判定。名词所有格规定：当名词与其它名词存在着所有关系、主谓关系、动宾关系或表示类别等意义时，该名词就采用所有格形式。上句中women与college之间存在着类别关系，因此答案B才是正确的。
