Nick Carter is mourning the sudden loss of his sister Bobbie Jean Carter, who died last month at 41.

In an emotional Instagram post Thursday featuring a childhood photo of him and his sister, the Backstreet Boys singer wrote, "It may take a lifetime to fully process the loss my family has endured over the years — most recently, with the sudden passing of our sister Bobbie Jean."

Bobbie Jean died Dec. 23, her mother, Jane, confirmed in a statement. Her passing came a little more than a year after her and Nick's brother Aaron Carter died at 34 from an accidental drowning caused by the effects of alprazolam, a generic form of Xanax, and inhaling compressed air. In 2012, their sister Leslie Carter died of an apparent overdose at 25.

Though her mother did not provide details on Bobbie Jean's death, she said in a statement at the time, "I am in shock from learning of the sudden death of my daughter, Bobbie Jean, and I will need time to process the terrible reality of this happening for the third time. When I am able to think clearly, I’ll release a fuller statement, but until then I would request to be left to grieve in private."
