People who are really unhappy, or miserable,
are not very fun to be around.
So why would we say this expression?

She called me last night and complained for an hour.
I know. These days, I don't take her calls.
She has been so unhappy lately.
She just wants others to complain with her.
That's sad. "Misery loves company," I guess.
