[00:14.58]Biarni was hoping to join his father

[00:19.37]but he was blown off course

[00:21.81]and found himself in an unknown land,

[00:25.21]from where he eventually reached Greenland.

[00:30.59]In the year 1002,

[00:33.16]when Eric the Red's son Leif

[00:35.82]was planning a trip further west,

[00:38.28]Biarni was the man with

[00:40.22]whom Leif discussed his plans.

[00:43.66]Leif followed Biarni's directions

[00:46.42]and sailed to what is believed to be the coast

[00:49.87]of present-day Canada.

[00:52.11]He then sailed further south to an island

[00:55.50]which is now known as Newfoundland.

[00:59.67]We know about Eric the Red

[01:01.96]and Leif's deeds through stories

[01:04.27]which were written down centuries later

[01:06.97]in Norway and Iceland.

[01:09.35]They are the first records

[01:11.57]we have of Europeans sailing to the Americans.
