眼下正值毕业季（graduation season），我们来聊聊跟“毕业”有关的那些英文表达吧~
学位服 cap and gown
学位服（academic dress/ costume）一般就称为cap /kæp/ and gown /gaʊn/，即学位帽和学位袍。
其实学位服还有个部分叫hood（兜帽，坎肩），就是披在背后的那个垂布。
学位帽最常用的叫法是cap，又叫square academic cap，graduate cap。
不过，“学位帽”还有个有趣的说法：“托泥板”，mortarboard /'mɔ:təbɔ:d/。
好吧，确实有点像……
 
毕业典礼 commencement/ graduation ceremony
英式英语里，毕业典礼一般叫graduation ceremony，毕业那天则是graduation day。
而在美国，毕业典礼则通常被称作commencement ceremony，毕业那天除了叫graduation day，也可以叫commencement day。

拨穗 turning of the tassel
cap上那个穗穗就叫tassel /'tæs(ə)l/，流苏 。
通常是校长或系主任，会为每个degree candidate（学位候选人）turn the tassel（拨穗），象征着transition from candidate to graduate。
正确的拨穗姿势，是从右到左，所以上台接受拨穗礼之前，记得把穗穗先拨到右边。

►英式英语里，本科和硕士论文都叫dissertation，博士论文叫thesis；
►而美式完全反过来，本科和硕士论文叫thesis，博士论文叫dissertation；
►paper可以指课程论文，或某个具体研究在会议或者期刊上发表的论文。如term paper, course paper, research paper。
►essay的含义较广，既可指几千字的短篇论文，也可以指散文或者杂文。
