A protectorate state, in its inception adopted by modern international law, is an autonomous territory that is protected diplomatically or militarily against third parties by a stronger state or entity. In exchange for this, the protectorate usually accepts specified obligations, which may vary greatly, depending on the real nature of their relationship.
保护国又称保护领、受保护国、被保护国、受保护领地，是受较强之国家(宗主国)支配和保护的国家或地区，是殖民地形式的一种。保护国是非独立国的一种，也是殖民统治的一种特殊形式。
2.Suzerain:宗主国
Suzerainty occurs where a region or people is a tributary to a more powerful entity which controls its foreign affairs while allowing the tributary vassal state internal autonomy.The dominant entity in the suzerainty relationship, or the more powerful entity itself, is called a Suzerain.
宗主权是指国家对其属国的内政及外交拥有干预的权力，对属国享有宗主权的国家即是宗主国。宗主国通常在一定程度上拥有属国的外交权，但属国仍保有独立的自治权力。
3.Hegemonic State:霸权国
霸权国是指该国在政治、经济、军事等各个方面拥有超出国际体系中诸国的占绝对优势的国家实力;而且有将自己的力量转化为对国际事务、国际体系和其他国际行为体进行干预乃至控制的意愿。霸权国建立霸权的手段或方式就是建立管理和控制国际事务、国际体系的各种国际机制，并胁诱其他国家参加，从而建立起自己的霸权体系。
