    • [00:14.55]of addressing this convention
    • [00:17.99]Tonight is a particular honor for me
    • [00:19.76]because let's face it
    • [00:21.57]my presence on this stage
    • [00:23.65]is pretty unlikely
    • [00:26.21]My father was a foreign student
    • [00:28.59]born and raised in a small village
    • [00:31.04]in Kenya
    • [00:33.43]He grew up herding goats

    • [00:37.26]His father my grandfather was a cook
    • [00:40.24]a domestic servant to the British
    • [00:43.19]But my grandfather had larger dreams
    • [00:45.95]for his son
    • [00:47.38]Through hard work and perseverance
    • [00:49.43]my father got a scholarship
    • [00:50.79]to study in a magical place, America
    • [00:54.49]that shone as a beacon of freedom
    • [00:56.19]and opportunity to so many
    • [00:57.77]who had come before.
    • [01:02.71]While studying here
    • [01:04.21]my father met my mother.
    • [01:07.21]She was born in a town
    • [01:08.52]on the other side of the world,
    • [01:10.09]in Kansas.
    • [01:16.73]Her father worked on oil rigs
    • [01:18.49]and farms through most of the Depression.
    • [01:21.54]The day after Pearl Harbor
    • [01:23.80]my grandfather signed up for duty
    • [01:26.74] joined Patton's army,
    • [01:27.74]marched across Europe.
    • [01:29.66]Back home, my grandmother raised a baby
    • [01:31.85]and went to work
    • [01:33.55]on a bomber assembly line.
    • [01:35.74]After the war,
    • [01:37.18]they studied on the G.I. Bill,
    • [01:38.96]bought a house through F.H.A.
    • [01:41.18]and later moved west all the way
    • [01:43.24]to Hawaii in search of opportunity.
    • [01:47.55]And they, too,
    • [01:48.65]had big dreams for their daughter.
    • [01:50.54]A common dream, born of two continents.
    • [01:54.24]My parents shared not only
    • [01:55.68]an improbable love
    • [01:57.57]they shared an abiding faith
    • [01:59.35]in the possibilities of this nation.
    • [02:02.16]They would give me an African name,
    • [02:03.87]Barack, or "blessed",
    • [02:05.68]believing that in a tolerant America
    • [02:07.38]your name is no barrier to success.
    • [02:12.79]They imagined me
    • [02:15.85]going to the best schools in the land
    • [02:19.13]even though they weren't rich
    • [02:20.28]because in a generous America
    • [02:21.80]you don't have to be rich
    • [02:23.43]to achieve your potential.
    • [02:28.71]They're both passed away now.
    • [02:30.77]And yet, I know that
    • [02:33.14]on this night they look down on me
    • [02:35.58]with great pride.
    • [02:37.70]And I stand here today,
    • [02:40.78]grateful for the diversity
    • [02:42.05]of my heritage
    • [02:43.80]aware that my parents' dreams
    • [02:45.62]live on in my two precious daughters.
    • [02:49.17]I stand here knowing that
    • [02:50.86]my story is part of
    • [02:52.55]the larger American story
    • [02:54.17]that I owe a debt to all of those
    • [02:56.12]who came before me
    • [02:57.19]and that, in no other country on earth,
    • [02:59.26]is my story even possible.
    • [03:07.20]Tonight, we gather to affirm
    • [03:11.41]the greatness of our Nation
    • [03:14.34]not because of
    • [03:14.97]the height of our skyscrapers,
    • [03:16.51]or the power of our military
    • [03:17.76]or the size of our economy.
    • [03:19.55]Our pride is based on
    • [03:20.98]a very simple premise
    • [03:22.67]summed up in a declaration
    • [03:24.92]made over two hundred years ago:
    • [03:27.55]We hold these truths to be self-evident,
    • [03:30.42]that all men are created equal
    • [03:34.62]that they are endowed
    • [03:35.62]by their Creator
    • [03:36.25]with certain inalienable rights
    • [03:37.97]that among these are
    • [03:39.29]Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
    • [03:43.05]That is the true genius of America
    • [03:47.11]a faith in simple dreams
    • [03:51.98]an insistence on small miracles
    • [03:55.67]That we can tuck in
    • [03:56.23]our children at night
    • [03:58.44]and know that they are fed
    • [03:59.69]and clothed and safe from harm
    • [04:02.06]That we can say what we think,
    • [04:03.62]write what we think,
    • [04:04.39]without hearing a sudden knock
    • [04:05.29]on the door
    • [04:07.54]That we can have an idea
    • [04:08.67]and start our own business
    • [04:10.23]without paying a bribe
    • [04:13.29]That we can participate
    • [04:14.37]in the political process
    • [04:15.67]without fear of retribution
    • [04:17.36]and that our votes will be counted
    • [04:19.39]at least most of the time.
    • [04:29.45]This year, in this election
    • [04:31.60]we are called to reaffirm our values
    • [04:34.09]and our commitments,
    • [04:35.03]to hold them against a hard reality
    • [04:37.66]and see how we're measuring up
    • [04:39.34]to the legacy of our forbearers
    • [04:40.84]and the promise of future generations.
    • [04:43.08]And fellow Americans,
    • [04:44.70]Democrats, Republicans, Independents
    • [04:47.45]I say to you tonight:
    • [04:48.89]We have more work to do
    • [04:54.14]more work to do
    • [04:56.27]for the workers I met in Galesburg Illinois
    • [04:58.64]who are losing their union jobs
    • [04:59.97]at the Maytag plant
    • [05:01.03]that's moving to Mexico,
    • [05:02.67]and now are having to compete
    • [05:04.05]with their own children
    • [05:05.17]for jobs that pay seven bucks an hour
    • [05:08.23]more to do for the father
    • [05:09.23]that I met who was losing his job
    • [05:11.86]and choking back the tears
    • [05:12.67]wondering how he would pay
    • [05:14.05]4,500 dollars a month
    • [05:15.80]for the drugs his son needs
    • [05:17.17]without the health benefits
    • [05:19.17]that he counted on?
    • [05:21.73]more to do for the young woman
    • [05:22.92]in East St. Louis,
    • [05:23.86]and thousands more like her,
    • [05:25.17]who has the grades,
    • [05:26.42]has the drive,
    • [05:27.48]has the will
    • [05:28.43]but doesn't have the money
    • [05:29.81]to go to college.
    • [05:31.94]Now, don't get me wrong.
    • [05:33.81]The people I meet in small towns
    • [05:35.69]and big cities, in diners
    • [05:37.14]and office parks
    • [05:39.45]they don't expect government
    • [05:40.39]to solve all their problems.
    • [05:42.55]They know they have to work hard
    • [05:43.84]to get ahead, and they want to.
    • [05:46.66]Go into the collar counties
    • [05:47.72]around Chicago
    • [05:48.59]and people will tell you
    • [05:49.72]they don't want their tax money wasted,
    • [05:51.67]by a welfare agency or by the Pentagon.
    • [05:55.80]Go into any inner city neighborhood
    • [06:01.08]and folks will tell you
    • [06:02.84]that government alone
    • [06:04.09]can't teach our kids to learn
    • [06:05.91]they know that parents have to teach,
    • [06:07.97]that children can't achieve
    • [06:09.41]unless we raise their expectations
    • [06:10.91]and turn off the television sets
    • [06:12.78]and eradicate the slander that says
    • [06:15.28]a black youth with a book
    • [06:16.72]is acting white.
    • [06:18.09]They know those things.
    • [06:25.82]People don't expect government
    • [06:29.50]to solve all their problems.
    • [06:32.08]But they sense, deep in their bones,
    • [06:35.02]that with just
    • [06:36.22]a slight change in priorities,
    • [06:37.74]we can make sure
    • [06:38.99]that every child in America
    • [06:39.94]has a decent shot at life,
    • [06:42.08]and that the doors of opportunity
    • [06:43.02]remain open to all.
    • [06:44.39]They know we can do better.
    • [06:46.77]And they want that choice.
    • [06:49.52]In this election, we offer that choice.
    • [06:52.27]Our Party has chosen a man
    • [06:53.91]to lead us who embodies
    • [06:55.47]the best this country has to offer.
    • [06:57.60]And that man is John Kerry.
    • [07:08.67]John Kerry understands the ideals of
    • [07:10.49]community, faith, and service
    • [07:12.69]because they've defined his life.
    • [07:14.81]From his heroic service to Vietnam,
    • [07:16.63]to his years as a prosecutor
    • [07:18.09]and lieutenant governor,
    • [07:19.08]through two decades
    • [07:20.22]in the United States Senate,
    • [07:21.50]he's devoted himself to this country.
    • [07:24.33]Again and again,
    • [07:25.58]we've seen him make tough choices
    • [07:27.08]when easier ones were available.
    • [07:29.39]His values and his record affirm
    • [07:32.21]what is best in us.
    • [07:34.83]John Kerry believes in an America
    • [07:36.27]where hard work is rewarded
    • [07:38.14]So instead of offering tax breaks
    • [07:39.45]to companies shipping jobs overseas,
    • [07:41.45]he offers them to companies
    • [07:43.16]creating jobs here at home.
    • [07:46.67]John Kerry believes in an America
    • [07:48.55]where all Americans can afford
    • [07:50.86]the same health coverage
    • [07:52.02]our politicians in Washington
    • [07:53.71]have for themselves.
    • [07:56.71]John Kerry believes in
    • [07:58.77]energy independence,
    • [08:00.52]so we aren't held hostage
    • [08:01.75]to the profits of oil companies,
    • [08:03.28]or the sabotage of foreign oil fields.
    • [08:07.95]John Kerry believes in
    • [08:09.33]the Constitutional freedoms
    • [08:10.97]that have made our country
    • [08:12.20]the envy of the world,
    • [08:13.70]and he will never saCRIfice
    • [08:15.08]our basic liberties,
    • [08:16.77]nor use faith as a wedge to divide us.
    • [08:26.24]And John Kerry believes
    • [08:28.81]that in a dangerous world
    • [08:31.37]war must be an option sometimes,
    • [08:33.40]but it should never be
    • [08:34.27]the first option.
    • [08:38.60]You know, a while back
    • [08:41.88]I met a young man named Shamus
    • [08:44.24]in a VFW Hall in East Moline, Illinois.
    • [08:47.54]He was a good-looking kid
    • [08:48.40]six two, six three,
    • [08:49.85]clear eyed, with an easy smile.
    • [08:51.77]He told me he'd joined the Marines
    • [08:54.42]and was heading to Iraq
    • [08:55.49]the following week.
    • [08:57.12]And as I listened to him
    • [08:59.29]explain why he'd enlisted,
    • [09:01.70]the absolute faith he had
    • [09:03.23]in our country and its leaders,
    • [09:04.79]his devotion to duty and service,
    • [09:06.82]I thought this young man
    • [09:08.41]was all that any of us
    • [09:09.76]might ever hope for in a child.
    • [09:12.60]But then I asked myself,
    • [09:14.29]Are we serving Shamus
    • [09:16.95]as well as he is serving us
    • [09:19.63]I thought of the 900 men and women
    • [09:22.60]sons and daughters
    • [09:23.79]husbands and wives,
    • [09:24.88]friends and neighbors
    • [09:26.07]who won't be returning
    • [09:27.83]to their own hometowns.
    • [09:29.93]I thought of the families
    • [09:31.62]I've met who were struggling
    • [09:32.74]to get by
    • [09:33.15]without a loved one's full income
    • [09:35.40]or whose loved ones
    • [09:36.55]had returned with a limb missing
    • [09:37.96]or nerves shattered
    • [09:39.76]but still
    • [09:40.95]lacked long-term health benefits
    • [09:42.37]because they were Reservists.
    • [09:45.51]When we send our young men and women
    • [09:47.57]into harm's way
    • [09:48.59]we have a solemn obligation
    • [09:50.99]not to fudge the numbers
    • [09:52.51]or shade the truth
    • [09:53.57]about why they're going,
    • [09:55.31]to care for their families
    • [09:56.24]while they're gone,
    • [09:57.23]to tend to the soldiers
    • [09:58.70]upon their return,
    • [09:59.76]and to never ever
    • [10:00.88]go to war without enough troops
    • [10:03.74]to win the war,
    • [10:04.74]secure the peace,
    • [10:05.91]and earn the respect of the world.
    • [10:18.82]Now let me be clear.
    • [10:23.40]We have real enemies in the world.
    • [10:26.02]These enemies must be found.
    • [10:27.55]They must be pursued.
    • [10:29.43]And they must be defeated.
    • [10:31.49]John Kerry knows this.
    • [10:32.93]And just as Lieutenant Kerry
    • [10:35.12]did not hesitate
    • [10:35.93]to risk his life
    • [10:36.99]to protect the men
    • [10:38.38]who served with him in Vietnam,
    • [10:39.93]President Kerry
    • [10:41.12]will not hesitate one moment
    • [10:42.93]to use our military might
    • [10:44.12]to keep America safe and secure.
    • [10:48.18]John Kerry believes in America.
    • [10:50.80]And he knows that
    • [10:53.30]it's not enough
    • [10:53.99]for just some of us to prosper
    • [10:56.30]for alongside our famous individualism,
    • [10:59.43]there's another ingredient
    • [11:00.80]in the American saga,
    • [11:03.05]a belief that we're all connected
    • [11:05.18]as one people.
    • [11:07.24]If there is a child
    • [11:08.13]on the south side of Chicago
    • [11:09.63]who can't read,
    • [11:10.44]that matters to me,
    • [11:11.44]even if it's not my child.
    • [11:13.82]If there is a senior citizen somewhere
    • [11:15.32]who can't pay for
    • [11:16.51]their presCRIption drugs,
    • [11:17.73]and having to choose
    • [11:18.55]between medicine and the rent,
    • [11:20.13]that makes my life poorer,
    • [11:21.69]even if it's not my grandparent.
    • [11:24.69]If there's an Arab American family
    • [11:26.51]being rounded up
    • [11:27.65]without benefit of an attorney
    • [11:28.96]or due process
    • [11:30.52]that threatens my civil liberties.
    • [11:38.49]It is that fundamental belief
    • [11:42.68]It is that fundamental belief
    • [11:44.96]I am my brother's keeper,
    • [11:46.52]I am my sister's keeper
    • [11:48.52]that makes this country work.
    • [11:51.83]It's what allows us
    • [11:53.58]to pursue our individual dreams
    • [11:55.65]and yet still come together
    • [11:57.40]as one American family.
    • [12:00.02]E pluribus unum
    • [12:01.83]Out of many, one.
    • [12:04.96]Now even as we speak
    • [12:07.90]there are those
    • [12:08.40]who are preparing to divide us
    • [12:10.58]the spin masters
    • [12:11.58]the negative ad peddlers
    • [12:12.96]who embrace the politics of
    • [12:15.21]anything goes
    • [12:16.96]Well, I say to them tonight,
    • [12:20.13]there is not a liberal America
    • [12:21.69]and a conservative America
    • [12:23.51]There is the United States of America.
    • [12:28.07]There is not a Black America
    • [12:29.82]and a White America
    • [12:31.32]and Latino America and Asian America
    • [12:34.26]There's the United States of America.
    • [12:39.79]The pundits like to slice
    • [12:42.22]and dice our country
    • [12:43.72]into Red States and Blue States
    • [12:46.33]Red States for Republicans,
    • [12:47.99]Blue States for Democrats.
    • [12:49.80]But I've got news for them, too.
    • [12:51.30]We worship an "awesome God"
    • [12:52.68]in the Blue States,
    • [12:54.11]and we don't like federal agents
    • [12:56.05]poking around in our libraries
    • [12:57.27]in the Red States.
    • [13:01.15]We coach Little League
    • [13:02.77]in the Blue States
    • [13:03.52]and yes
    • [13:04.15]we've got some gay friends
    • [13:05.40]in the Red States.
    • [13:08.16]There are patriots
    • [13:09.35]who opposed the war in Iraq
    • [13:10.79]and there are patriots
