Like it or not, people tend to give labels to singers - Adele, pop; Eminem, rap; Miranda Lambert, country. But that rule doesn’t seem to apply to Bruno Mars. The 32-year-old US singer is, in the eyes of The New York Times critic Jon Caramanica, “one of the most versatile and accessible singers” working today.

After hearing the musician display a wide variety of music styles ranging from pop to hip-hop to rock, Caramanica said “there is nowhere Mars doesn’t belong.”

Mars won six awards at the American Music Awards on Nov 19, including artist of the year and favorite male artist.

And unlike many of today’s popular singers, Mars didn’t get to where he is via a talent show or the internet. After he left his hometown of Hawaii for Los Angeles, California, to pursue his dreams at 17, Mars was “rejected and rejected and rejected for years”, as he told the Mercury News. Before he was able to appear on stage, he had to prove himself by producing and writing songs for others.
