Jack the Giant Slayer is a 2013 American fantasy adventure film based on the fairy tales, "Jack the Giant Killer" and "Jack and the Beanstalk". The film stars Nicholas Hoult and Ewan McGregor. The film tells the story of Jack, a young farmhand who must rescue a princess from a race of giants after accidentally opening a gateway to their world. The official Warner Bros. site says: "Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult), into the battle of his life to stop them.…He comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend… and gets the chance to become a legend himself."
Jack the Giant Slayer has received a mixed response from film critics. The film received a 53% approval rating on the review website, Rotten Tomatoes, which wrote: "It's enthusiastically acted and reasonably fun, but Jack the Giant Slayer is also overwhelmed by its digital effects and a story so middle-of-the-road as to be a bit bland and impersonal." Conversely, Richard Roeper of the 'Chicago Sun-Times' said, "Jack the Giant Slayer is a rousing, original and thoroughly entertaining adventure." The flick didn't bring in as much cash as expected at the box office. The 'Hollywood Reporter' estimated that the film was on track to lose between $125 million and $140 million.
