生当如夏花

It is not growing like a tree

in bulk doth make man better be;

or standing long an oak, three hundred year,

to fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:

a lily of a day

is fairer far in may,

although it fall and die that night—

it was the plant and flower of light.

in small proportions we just beauties see;

and in short measures life may perfect be.

五月之百合，

绽放一日，便有万种风情;

纵然是夜凋零，

却是光华的落英;

于细微处领略美丽，

赏析

本杰明·琼森(1572~1637)，英国文艺复兴时期剧作家、诗人和演员，与莎士比亚处于同一时代。其最知名的戏剧作品为《福尔蓬奈》(Volpone)、《炼金士》(The Alchemist)和《巴塞洛缪集市》(Bartholomew Fair)。这首诗很容易让我们想起1757年生的英国诗人威廉·布莱克的著名长诗《天真的预言》(Auguries of Innocence)头四句：to see a world in a grain of sand/and a heaven in a wild flower/hold infinity in the palm of your hand/and eternity in an hour. 梁宗岱先生将这四句译为：“一沙一世界，一花一天堂。双手握无限，刹那是永恒。”琼森的这首诗同样微言大义，以草木喻人世，以一现昙花竞地久天长。道理说来浅显易懂，不复赘言。但就是这样一个浅显的道理，却让身处不同时代的两位诗人通过诗作共同表达。不知诗人是否也有这样的感慨：世代繁衍的人类中，有几人能真正领悟这条穿越千年的偈语!
