102　base，basis和foundation

① base表示“基础，根基，基地”，指具体物的下部、底座或支撑结构，以使上面的东西竖立并稳固；也用于指工业或军事的基地。base作动词用时，要同on或upon连用。

The machine rests on a wide base of steel. 这台机器固定在一个很宽的钢架上。

This vase falls over a lot because the base is too small. 这个花瓶的底部太小，所以时常翻倒。

The airplanes returned safely to their base. 飞机安全返回基地。

② basis一般不用来指实物，而指思想、理论、抽象概念的“基础，依据，原则”。
