Hello, I'm Neil Nunes with the BBC news. Donald Trump has used his first major political speech since his tumultuous departure from the White House to position himself as a prospective Republican presidential candidate in 2024. He told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida, he had no plans to launch a new party and would actively back Republican congressional candidates who supported him in mid-term elections. With your help, we will take back the House. We will win the Senate. And then a Republican president will make a triumphant return to the White House. And I wonder who that will be.

The United Nations has condemned the use of lethal force against peaceful protesters in Myanmar after it said at least 18 were killed on Sunday. The Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was deeply disturbed by events. Tom Andrews is the UN special rapporteur to the country. A global arms embargo, I think, is critically important. Secondly, I think there needs to be a coordinated, tough, targeted sanctions, not only on individuals, but also on their businesses and business interests. We need to see those sanctions not only increased, but also coordinated, so that they have the greatest possible effect. It was the bloodiest days since mass protests began against the military leaders who overthrew the elected government last month. Protesters in several cities were confronted by live ammunition, rubber bullet, stunned guns and water cannon.

A high court judge in Brazil has ordered the government to reopen hospital intensive care beds in three states closed this month. The judge said there was no justification in the middle of one of the world's worst coronavirus outbreaks. Here's Candace Piette. Officials in Sao Paulo say the number of intensive care beds in public hospitals has been reduced from around 4.000 to fewer than 500. Beds were also closed in the states of Bahia and Maranhao. Health officials say Brazil's hospitals are becoming overwhelmed with more than 80% capacity in 17 state capitals. Several governors are attempting to impose curfews in lockdown measures to tackle a second COVID wave that has remained stubbornly high for months as more contagious variances flourish.

Indigenous organizations in Peru say two of their leaders were killed this week by criminal gangs in the Amazon region. Both men who were leaders of the Cacataibo ethnic group had publicly denounced the invasion of their lands by drug traffickers to plant cocoa for the illegal drug trade. The deaths of the two men are the latest in a series of killings in the Amazon, where criminal gangs are taking advantage of the COVID pandemic to make land grabs. World news from the BBC.
