LESSON 42 Too clever

第四十二课 聪明过头

Fred came from school the first half-year

弗雷德上半年入学，

As learned as could be,

努力学了很多知识，

And wished to show to all around how smart a boy was he.

他想着向所有人证明自己的聪明才智。

And so at dinner he began,—

所以，吃完饭时，他开始卖弄，——

"Papa, you think you see two roasted chickens on that dish,now I will prove them three!

“爸爸，你现在看到盘子里有两只烤鸡，但我要证明这有三只。”

"First, this is one, and that is two,as plain as plain can be;

“首先，这是一，那是二，很简单，

I add the one unto the two,and two and one make three."—

我用一加上二，就得到三了。”

"Just so," then answered his papa;

“就这样，”他爸爸回答道；

"If what you say is true,

“如果你说的是真的，

I will take one, mamma takes one,

那我吃一只，你妈妈吃一只，

The third we leave for you!"

你就吃第三只吧！”
