    LESSON 24 The bells

    第二十四课 尘世之音

    Hear the sledges with the bells—silver bells!

    听,雪橇声——那是银铃铛发出的声音!

    What a world of merriment their melody foretells!

    那旋律勾勒的是一个充满欢声笑语的国度!

    How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, in the icy air of night!

    那铃声叮当、叮当、叮当地响着,划破了夜的寂静!

    while the stars, that oversprinkle all the heavens, seem to twinkle with a crystalline delight;

    那天空中洒落的点点星辰,也似在发出水晶般的清脆笑声;

    keeping time, time, time, in a sort of Runic rhyme,

    和着拍子,不停地,响着,以某种神秘的古老旋律,

    to the tintinnabulation that so musically wells from the bells,

    伴着那叮叮当当悦耳的铃声,

    bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells,

    叮铃铃,叮铃铃,叮铃铃,叮铃铃,叮铃铃,叮铃铃

    from the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.

    美妙无比。

    Hear the mellow wedding bells—golden bells!

    听,柔和的婚礼进行曲——那是金铃铛发出的声音!

    What a world of happiness their harmony foretells!

    预示着幸福和谐!

    Through the balmy air of night how they ring out their delight!

    声音穿透那温柔惬意的夜渗出浓浓喜悦!

    From the molten-golden notes, and all in tune, what a liquid ditty floats to the turtle-dove that listens, while she gloats on the moon!

    那炽热的金色音符,飘进了那只正忘我赏着月儿的斑鸠的耳朵里!

    Oh, from out the sounding cells what a gush of euphony voluminously wells!

    啊,那声元里涌出的音色是那么地悦耳和动听!

    How it swells, how it dwells on the future!

    越来越响,越来越响,热情地诉说着彼此幸福美好的未来!

    How it tells of the rapture that impels to the swinging and the ringing of the bells,

    它满心欢舞,带得铃声叮叮当当,响个不停,

    bells, bells, of the bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells—

    叮叮,叮叮,叮叮,叮叮,叮叮,叮叮,叮叮,叮叮,叮叮——

    to the rhyming and the chiming of the bells!

    押韵和谐!

    Hear the loud alarum bells—brazen bells!

    听,刺耳的警报声——那是铜铃发出的声音!

    What a tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!

    这吵闹的钟声诉说的是恐惧和噩梦!

    In the startled ear of night how they scream out their affright!

    在不安的夜晚凄厉地嚎叫!

    Too much horrified to speak, they can only shriek, shriek, out of tune;

    惊恐不已,无法言语,只能尖叫、尖叫、失声;

    in a clamorous appealing to the mercy of the fire, in a mad expostulation with the deaf and frantic fire,

    在发狂和耳聋的烈火前苦苦哀求,大声地祈求它的仁慈,

    leaping higher, higher, higher, with a resolute endeavour now—

    火焰越来越高、越来越烈,现在,它要孤注一掷、燃烧自我

    now to sit or never, by the side of the pale-faced moon.

    现在,在苍白的月色下端坐吧,否则再无时机。

    Oh, the bells, bells, bells! what a tale their terror tells of despair!

    噢,铃声响着,不停地,响着!恐惧诉说着一个绝望的故事!

    How they clang, and clash, and roar!

    它们发着铿锵声、碰撞声和咆哮声!

    What a horror they outpour on the bosom of the palpitating air!

    连空气都要怕地瑟瑟发抖!

    Yet the ear it fully knows, by the twanging and the clanging, how the danger ebbs and flows:

    耳朵洞察了这一切,通过那叮叮当当的铃声,知道了危险的此起彼伏:

    yet the ear distinctly tells, in the jangling and the wrangling,

    在那刺耳的嘈杂声里,耳朵能清晰明辨

    how the danger sinks and swells, by the sinking or the swelling in the anger of the bells,

    通过铃声的高低缓和,感受危险的渐近渐远,

    of the bells, of the bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells—

    呲呲,呲呲,呲呲,呲呲,呲呲,呲呲,呲呲,呲呲——

    in the clamour and the clangour of the bells!

    喧嚣嘈杂!

    Hear the tolling of the bells—iron bells!

    听,幽幽的丧钟声——那是铁钟发出的声音!

    What a world of solemn thought their monody compels!

    哀婉的悼词,气氛庄严肃穆!

    In the silence of the night how we shiver with affright at the melancholy menace of their tone;

    寂静的夜幕下,那忧郁的声音响起,人们不寒而栗;

    for every sound that floats from the rust within their throats is a groan.

    只因铁锈里发出的,是一声声悲伤的呻吟。

    And the people—ah, the people—they that dwell up in the steeple all alone, and who, tolling, tolling, tolling,

    那些人——啊,那些人——那些住在塔尖上形单影只的人,是他们敲响了这怨钟,敲着,不停地敲着,

    in that muffled monotone, feel a glory in so rolling on the human heart a stone—

    那沉闷枯燥的声音在人们的心灵上滚动着一块巨石,而那些人啊,却在沾沾自喜——

    they are neither man nor woman—they are neither brute nor human—they are Ghouls!

    他们不是男人,不是女人——不是牲畜,也不是人类——他们是食尸鬼!

    And their king it is who tolls;

    敲响丧钟的是他们的国王;

    and he rolls, rolls, rolls, rolls a paean from the bells!

    他敲着钟,敲着,敲着,敲的是一首赞歌!

    And his merry bosom swells with the paean of the bells!

    他那愉悦的胸膛随着赞歌膨胀~膨胀~

    And he dances and he yells; keeping time, time, time,

    他跳着舞,欢呼雀跃;伴着那铃声,兴奋,舞动,

    in a sort of Runic rhyme, to the paean of the bells—of the bells:

    以某种神秘的古老旋律,敲着赞歌,敲着:

    keeping time, time, time, in a sort of Runic rhyme,

    和着拍子,不停地,敲着,以某种神秘的古老旋律,

    to the throbbing of the bells—of the bells, bells, bells—to the sobbing of the bells;

    伴着钟声的悸动——不停地,响着,响着——和着那哀怨的呻吟声;

    keeping time, time, time, as he knells, knells, knells,

    和着拍子,不停地,起舞,雀跃,敲着钟,不停地,敲着,

    in a happy Runic rhyme, to the rolling of the bells—of the bells, bells, bells—to the tolling of the bells,

    伴着那欢快地神秘旋律,伴着那此起彼伏的哀怨钟声——响着,不停地,响着——伴着那敲响的铃声,

    of the bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells—

    叮铃,叮铃,叮铃,叮铃,叮铃,叮铃,叮铃——

    to the moaning and the groaning of the bells.

    伴着哽咽和呻吟。
