The first wave was a big one and it knocked the surfboard out of his hands．Matt had to walk in water after it．“Try to be near the white waves！”Wayne，his best friend，shouted in the sea．He tried again，hanging on the surfboard．But both he and the board were carried back and thrown onto the beach.

Matt almost wished that he'd never started．Just then a girl glided freely through the waves in front of Matt．Although Matt could only see the back of her，he knew it was Jennifer，a girl from his class．Matt's mouth dropped open．“If Jennifer could do that，I could too！”He looked for the next wave，then，just as Jennifer had done，he was also up on the board，flinging out his arms．For one moment he stood！He felt so excited that he wanted to cry．Just then he fell off the surfboard and knocked his head hard．There was blackness in his eyes.

When he woke up，he found Martin slapping his face，and he heard Jennifer and Wayne saying his name.
