一、从属连词
That，whether，if既不是连接代词也不是连接副词，在从句中不充当任何成分，只起到连接从句的功能。That没有实际意义，而whether，if有“是否”的意思。
例句：That prices for fruit will go up is certain.
水果价格要上涨是确凿无疑的了。（that引导主语从句，不作成分）
例句：He ordered that we should start at once.
他命令我们马上出发。（that引导宾语从句，不作成分）
例句：Please ask Tom if he will come to Jim's birthday party tomorrow.
问一下汤姆他明天会不会来参加吉姆的生日聚会。（if引导宾语从句，不作成分）
Whether与if均为“是否”的意思。但在下列情况下，whether不能被if替代
① whether引导主语从句并置于句首时
例句：Whether he can come to the party on time depends on the traffic.
他是否能按时来参加聚会要看交通状况。
② whether引导表语从句时
例句：The question is whether we can arrive there on time.
问题是我们能否准时到那里。
③ whether从句作介词宾语时
例句：It depends on whether it will be fine.
那得看是不是晴天。
④ whether后紧跟or not时
例句：I don't know whether or not he arrives.
我不知道他是否已经到了。
