“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth installment in Disney’s action franchise, sailed over the competition, grossing $90.1 million over the weekend. Though the film, in which Johnny Depp reprises his popular role as the flamboyant pirate Capt. Jack Sparrow, received only middling reviews, it earned an impressive $256.3 million overseas, giving the film a world-wide gross of $346.4 million worldwide ─ the highest international movie opening of all time.

The comedy “Bridesmaids” came in No. 2 over the weekend, with a 20% drop in attendance. (As a barometer, comedy hits “The Hangover” and “Wedding Crashers” droped 27% and 24% their respective second weekends.) The $32.5 million film grossed $21.2 million for the weekend, bringing its cumulative gross to $59.5 million.
