    Bokeo is located outside the town of Huay Xai and is a famous nature reserve known for its conservation program to protect the black-cheeked gibbon, which was rediscovered in 1997 after being thought to have been extinct. This nature reserve was established in 2004 with the mission of preserving 123,000 hectares of primary tropical forest. The forest has rare and precious biodiversity with animals such as tigers, bears, elephants, chimpanzees, buffaloes... and many species of birds and insects.

    This sanctuary allows you to stay in tree houses, giving stunning views of the forest canopy and you can also take part in fun forest activities such as zip line swings to see apes, elephants, bears, tigers and buffaloes in the park.

    Coming to Bokeo is coming to the land of vastness and majesty with beautiful little houses lying on top of trees. It is the complete pristineness that makes the nature reserve in northern Laos extremely attractive to tourists. Part of the reserve is used by local people for cultivation and partly for ecotourism.

Hence the only way to get in Bokeo is to join the conservation project - The Gibbon Experience - run by Societe Animo in Huay Xai.

    The Gibbon Experience project was established in 2004 with the mission of preserving the forest around Huay Xai from poaching and logging. This is largely done through fees collected from tourists wanting to experience the jungle. Here you have the option of trekking, all with an overnight stay in tree houses and a fun zip line, combined to provide a great view of the forest.

    The packages that the Gibbon Experience in the Bokeo Nature Reserve offers include a few days of trekking through the jungle to discover some of the exotic wildlife there. First and foremost, it's the gibbons. You will see black-cheeked gibbon swinging through the tops of trees, looking for food and raising their young.

    Black gibbons live in families, each consists of a male, a female and usually no more than 5 of them. You can spot gibbons by their white fur, which gradually turns black or yellow as they turn one year old. These interesting creatures spend most of their lives in trees, where they move from branch to branch using their arms to support their entire body and swing, something few other apes or monkeys do. Black-cheeked gibbons can travel at a speed of about 50km / h by this method.

    On top of giant trees, visitors can enjoy the beautiful nature of the old forest while protecting the environment. The Gibbon Experience project is a bridge between people and the rainforest in the Bokeo Nature Reserve.
