THE SMITHES 1982年成立于英国的曼彻斯特，1988年解散，MORRISSEY独立发展。在以新浪潮(New Wave)为主流并且引发第二次英伦入侵美国(British Invasion)过程中，THE SMITHES却婉拒多家主流公司六位数(英镑)的优渥条件而与独立唱片Rough Trade签约。在独立唱片公司中THE SMITHES不需依照流行的口味生产音乐，在音乐上他们回归简单的四人乐队，以吉他伴奏为主，属新音乐(Brit Rock)主宰流行市场都是曼彻斯特吉他乐团兴起的影响所及；在歌词方面，他们有着尖锐的政治、人文批判，THE SMITHES因此在非流行的独立唱片排行(Independent Chart, Indie)拥有超高人气，在英国流行单曲、专辑榜上亦是成绩斐然。
