Herman Melville

麦尔维尔（Herman Melville，1819-1891），美国浪漫主义小说家、诗人。代表作为长篇小说《白鲸》。出身望族，幼年丧父，家境衰微，从小出外谋生。从事过多种职业，航海生涯使他获得浪漫传奇式的经历，成为他创作的源泉。他起初在英国取得声望，后来才在美国享誉。又曾受到误解，冷落。直到二十世纪二十年代才重享盛誉。他的诗《马尔代夫鲨鱼》取材于海洋，是他的名作之一。

绕着那粘液质的冷血动物：鲨鱼——

About the Shark, phlegmatical one,

马尔代夫海里苍白的酒糊涂，

Pale sot of the Maldive sea,

蓝色的、细长滑溜的小舟??

The sleek little pilot-fish, azure and slim,

多么警觉地在四周卫护。

How alert in attendance be.

那锯齿形嘴的深洞，积尸骨的肠胃，

From his saw-pit of mouth, from his charnel of maw

对舟??来说是无害的，并不可怖，

They have nothing of harm to dread,

舟??们滑游在鲨鱼惨白的胁腹旁边，

But liquidly glide on his ghastly flank

或游过鲨鱼的戈根 式的头部；

Or before his Gorgonian head;

或潜隐在锯形巨齿围绕的港口，

Or lurk in the port of serrated teeth

在三重白色的闪闪发光的洞门深处，

In white triple tiers of glittering gates,

在那儿找到了没有危险的安全地带，

And there find a haven when peril's abroad,

命运的鬼门关里正好是避难的去处！

An asylum in jaws of the Fates!

他们是朋友；舟??们友好地引导鲨鱼去捕掠，

They are friends; and friendly they guide him to prey,

但是从来不分享鲨鱼的猎物——

Yet never partake of the treat—

苍白的鲨鱼，贪吃那可怕的肉食，

Eyes and brains to the dotard lethargic and dull,

而眼睛和头脑近于昏聩，迟钝又冷酷。

Pale ravener of horrible meat.
