I am writing to ask for leave of absence for a period starting from March 1st.

The reason for the request is the recent accident suffered by my grandfather. He is currently in intensive care in the hospital. As his only grandson, I have an obligation to be with him in his hour of need. He is in a stable condition but the following days are critical. If all goes well, I would expect to return within a week but, if the worst happens, I will advise you and request an extension.

I thank you in anticipation of your approval which, I fully understand, will be on the basis of unpaid leave.
