    India-The Foods

Welcome to Window on the World. I am so glad that you are listening today! We have been learning about the country of India. This week we will learn about the kinds of foods our Indian friends enjoy.

One of the foods that is eaten not only in India but in much of Asia is rice. It is eaten mostly in the south of India. In the north, a wheat bread called roti is eaten. The foods do vary widely in India, depending on the region where the people live.

Indian meals are usually very spicy. Different types of curry, made with eggs, fish, meat, or vegetables, are popular. Some people are vegetarians. This means that they eat no meat, just vegetables and rice or breads. Some Indian diets are effected by their cultural rules and customs. Most Indians consider cows to be sacred and they will not eat beef. Fruits and sweets are often served to guests.

If you visited a home, you would find that some families in cities will eat together and may follow many Western customs. You would find that tea is often served. That is because India is a leading world producer of tea. When eating, most traditional families often use the right hand instead of utensils for eating their food. Women often eat after other members of the family and any guests.

Our Indian friends eat very simply. Do you think you might want to try Indian foods? I would enjoy the vegetables and rice and especially the sweets! They are my favorites! Next week, we will open our Window on the World and find out about the animals of India. Be sure to listen next week. Farewell friends!
