今天我们聊聊《傲慢与偏见》，

上学的时候，老师也“强迫”你去读过吗？

来听今天的讲解：

A: I can’t believe my English teacher is making me read pride and prejudice!

我的英语老师居然让我去读《傲慢与偏见》。

B: Why not! It’s a classic; in fact, it’s one of my favorite novels.

为什么不呢?它可是我最喜欢的经典小说。

A: But it’s so old.

它太老了。

B: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Do you kwon what it’s about?

不要根据封面去判定书的内容。你了解这本小说吗？

A: No, not at all.

不了解。

B: First of all, it’s a romance novel, set in the early 19th century.

首先，它是19世纪初的浪漫爱情小说。

A: I didn’t realize it was a romance novel. What’s the main storyline?

我根本就不知道是一本爱情小说。故事的情节是什么呢？

B: It’s basically about a father who tried to marry off one of his five girls.

它是关于一个父亲想嫁出去五个女儿其中的一个的故事。

A: Why does he want to do that?

他为什么要这么做？

B: Since he doesn’t have a son, he hopes that one of the girls will marry a wealthy man. That way, all of his daughters will be cared for.

因为他没有儿子，所以她希望把一个女儿嫁给有钱人，这样他所有的女儿都能被照顾到了。

A: Won’t they get his inheritance?

她们能否继承老夫妻的房产吗？

B: No, that’s the problem. Though they are well-off, once he dies, his house will go to his cousin. So, when he dies, the girls will have nothing.

这就是问题所在，虽然他们很有钱，但是，他死了以后所有的一切都要给他的堂兄弟，所以他去世后他的女儿得不到任何东西。

A: I see. This sounds interesting! Maybe my teacher isn’t so horrible after all.

听起来故事情节还不错，没那么可怕。
