    [00:27.09]I run a manufacturing company with about 350employees,and I often do the interviewing and hiring myself.
    [00:36.73]I like talking to potential sales people,because they're our link to customers.
    [00:43.18]When a recent college graduate came into my office ont too long ago looking for a sales job,
    [00:50.02]I asked him what he had done to prepare for the inerview.He said he'd read something about us somewhere.
    [00:58.28]Had he called anyone at Mackay Envelope Corporation to find out more about us?
    [01:04.76]No.Had he called our suppliers?Our customers?No.
    [01:11.26]Had he checked with his university to see if there were any graduates wording at Mackay whom he could interview?
    [01:18.94]Had he asked any friends to grill him in a mock interview?
    [01:23.54]Did he go to the library to find newspaper clippings on us?
    [01:28.87]Did he write a letter beforehand to tell us about himself,what he was doing to prepare for the interview
    [01:36.16]and why he'd be right for the job?Was he planning to follow up the interview with another leteer
    [01:43.29]indicatinghis eagerness to join us?
    [01:46.89]Would the letter be in our hands within 24 hours of the meeting,possibly even hand-delivered?
    [01:53.84]The answer to every question was the same:no.That left me with only one other question:
    [02:01.60]How well prepared would this person be if he were to call on a prospective customer for us?I already knew the answer
    [02:10.40]As I see it,there are four keys to getting hired:
    [02:14.87]1. Prepare to win. "If you miss one day of practice,you notice the difference,"the sayinggoes among musicians.
    [02:24.27]"If you miss two days of practice,the critics notice the difference.
    [02:29.42]If you miss three days of practice,the audience notices the difference.
    [02:35.30]When we watch a world-class musician or a top athlete,
    [02:40.18]we don't see the years of preparation that enabled him or her to become griat.The Michael Jordans of the world have talent
    [02:48.62]yes,but they're also the first ones on and the last ones off the basketball court.
    [02:55.46]The same preparation applies in every form of human endeavor.If you want the job,you have to prepare to win it.
    [03:03.90]When I graduated from college,the odds were good that I would have the same job for the rest of my life.
    [03:10.69]And that's how it worked out.But getting hired is no longer a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
    [03:18.32]Employment experts believe that today's graduates could face as many as ten job changes during their careers.
    [03:26.52]That may sound lide a lot of pressure.
    [03:30.02]But if you're prepared,the pressure is on the other folks-the ones who haven't done their homework.
    [03:36.40]You won't get every job you go after.The best salespeople don't close every sale.
    [03:43.11]Michael Jordan mades barely half of his field-goal attempts.
    [03:48.21]But it takes no longer to prepare well for one interview than to wander in half-prepared for five.
    [03:55.13]And your prospects for success will be many times better.
    [04:00.27]2Never stop learning.Recently I played a doubles tennis match paired with a 90-year old.I wondered how things would work out
    [04:11.72]I shouldn't have .We hammered our opponents 6-1.6-1!
    [04:17.67]As we were switching sides to play a third wdt ,he said to me,
    [04:22.77]Do you mind if I play the backhand court?I always like to work on my weaknesses.
    [04:29.17]"What a fantastic example of a person who has never stopped learning.Incidentally,we won the third set 6-1.
    [04:38.57]As we walked off the court,my 90-year-old partner chuckled and said,
    [04:44.21]"I thought you'd like to know about my number-one randing in doubles in the United States in my age bracket,
    [04:52.15]85 and up!"He wasn't thinking90;he wasn't even thinking85.He was thinking number one.
    [05:02.13]You can do the same if you work on your weaknesses and develop your strengths.To be able to compete,
    [05:10.07]you've got to keep learning all yourlife.
    [05:13.55]3.Believe in yourself,even when on one else does.Do you remember the four-minute mile?
    [05:21.72]Athletes had been trying to do it for hundreds of years and finally decided it was physically impossible for humans
    [05:30.29]Our bone structure was all wrong,our lung power inadequate.
    [05:35.54]Then one human proved the experts wrong.And,miracle of miracles,six weeks after Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile
    [05:45.78]John Landy beat Bannister's time by nearly two full seconds.
    [05:51.22]Since then,close to eight hundred runners have broken the four-minute mile!
    [05:56.94]Several years ago my daughter Mimi and I took a crack at running the New York Marathon.At the gun,
    [06:05.51]23,000runners started-and 21,244finished.First place went to a Kenyan who completed the race in two hours,
    [06:17.37]11minutes and one second.The 21,244 th runner to finish was a Vietnam veteran.He did it in three days,
    [06:29.02]nine hours and 37minutes.With no legs,he covered26.2miles.After mydaughter and I
    [06:39.26]passed him in the first few minutes,we easily found more courage to finish ouselves.
    [06:46.00]Don't everlet anyone tell you that you can't accomplish your goals.Who says you're not tougher,
    [06:53.58]harder working and more able than your competition?
    [06:57.99]You see, a goal is a dream with a deadline:in writing,measurable,identifiable,attainable.
    [07:06.82]4.Find a way to make a difference.In my opinion,the majority of New York cabdrivers are unfriendly,
    [07:16.09]if not downright rude.Most of the cabs are filthy, and almost all of them sport an impenetrable,
    [07:24.56]bulletproof partition.But recently I jumped into a cab at LaGuardia Airport and guess what?It was clean.
    [07:34.88]There was beautiful music playing and no partition.
    [07:39.74]"Park Lane Hotel,please,"I said to the driver.With a broad smile,he said, "Hi,my name is Wally,"
    [07:48.52]and he handed me a mission statement.A mission statement!It said he would get me there safely,courteously and on time
    [07:58.86]As we drove off,he held up a choice of newspapers and said, "Be my guest,"
    [08:05.03]He told me to help myself to the fruit in the basket on the back seat.
    [08:10.31]He held up a cellular phone and said, "It's a dollar a minute if you'd like to make a call."
    [08:16.99]Shocked,I blurted, "How long have youbeen practicing this?"He answered, "Three of four years."
    [08:25.48]"I know this is prying."I said, "but how much extra money do you earn in tips?
    [08:32.38]"Between $12,000and$14,000a year!"he responded proudly.
    [08:39.28]He doesn't know it,but he's my hero.He's livingproof that you canalways shift the odds in your favor.

    [09:29.94]As we were taxiing down it to take off,Curt turned to me and said gleefully, "Look,Harvey,no tracks in the snow!"
