[00:00.00] The attack was fierce, without mercy, leaving Blindy handicapped for life.Yet Blindy wanted no pity.He hand taken his revenge
[00:11.55]A MAN OF THE WORLD by Ernest Heminqway
[00:16.69]The blind man knew the sounds of all the different machines in the Sallon. I don't know
[00:24.53]how long it took him to learn the sounds of the machines but it must have taken him quite a time
[00:32.13]because he only worked one sollon at a time.He worked two towns though
[00:39.97]and he would start out of The Flats along after it was good and dark o his way up to Jessup.
[00:46.97]He'd stop by the side of the road when he heard a car coming and their lights would pick him up
[00:53.76]and either they would stop and give him a ride or they wouldn't and would go on by on the icy road.
[01:01.00](1)It would depedend on how they were loaded and whether there were women in the car
[01:07.11]because the blind man smelled plenty strong and especially in winter.
[01:12.54]But someone would always stop for him because he was a blind man.
[01:18.16]Everybody knew him and they called him Blindy, which is a good mane for a blind man in that part of the country,
[01:26.31]and the name of the saloon that he threw his trade to was The Pilot.Right nest to it was another saloon,
[01:35.69]also with gambling and a dining room, that was called The Index. Both of these were the names of mountains
[01:44.36]and they were both good saloons with old-days bars and the gambling was about the same in one as in the other
[01:52.61]except you ate better in The Pilot probably.
[01:57.11]Blindy probably preferred The Pilot because the machines were right along the left-hand wall
[02:04.13]as you came in and faced the bar. This gave him better control over them than he would have had at The Index
[02:12.60]where they were scattered on account it was a bigger place with more room.On this night it was really cold outside
[02:22.00]and he came in with icicles on his mustache and he didn't look really very good.(2)Even his smell was froze
[02:31.28]but that wasn't for very long and he started to put out almost as soon as the door was shut.
[02:39.09]It was always hard for me to look at him but I was looking at him carefully
[02:44.94]because I knew he always rode and Ididn't see how he would be frozen up so bad. Finally I asked him.
    [02:54.08]"Where you walk from,Blindy?"
[02:57.48]"Willie Sawyer put me out of his car down below the railway bridge. There weren't no more cars come and I walked in."
[03:05.23]"What did he put you afoot for?"somebody asked.
    [03:09.91]"Said I smelled too bad."
[03:13.62]Somebody hit on a machine but it wasn't any heavy hit.Blindy moved on it just the same.
[03:21.87]It was a quarter machine and the young fellow who was playing it gave him a quarter sort of reluctantly.
[03:29.03]Blindy felt it before he put it in his pocket.
    [03:34.00]"Thank you,"he said. "You'll never miss it."
[03:38.44]The young fellow said, "Nice to know that,"and put a quarter back in the machine and pulled down again.
[03:46.69]He hit again but this time pretty good and he scooped in the quarters and gave a quarter to Blindy.
    [03:54.34]"Thanks,"Blindy said, "You're doing fine."
[03:58.99]"Tonight's my night,"the young fellow who was playing said.
[04:04.19](3) "Your night is may night,"Blindy said and the young fellow went on playing
[04:10.46]but he wasn't doing any good any more and Blindy was so strong standing by him
[04:17.78]and he looked so awful and finally the fellow quit playing and came over to the bar.
[04:24.15]"What will yours be,Tom?"Frank the bartender asked me."This is on the house."
    [04:30.81]"I was figuring on shoving."
    [04:34.29]"Have one first then ."
[04:37.39]Frank asked the young fellow what he would drind and the young fellow took the same. The whisky was Old Forester.
[04:44.97]I nodded to him and raised my drink and we both sipped at the drinks.Blindy was down at the far end of the machines.
[04:53.64]I think he figured maybe no one would come in if they saw him at the door. Not tht he was self-con-scious.
[05:01.92]"How did that man lose his sight?"the young fellow asked me.
    [05:07.25]"In a fight,"Frand told him.
    [05:11.25]"I wouldn't know,"I told him.
    [05:14.91]"Him fight?"the stranger said.He shook his head.
[05:20.63]"Yeah,"Frank said. "He got that high voice out of the same fight.Tell him,Tom."
    [05:27.73]"I never heard of it."
    [05:31.00]"No.You wouldn't of ,"Frand said. "Of course not.You wasn't here,I suppose.Mister,
[05:38.65]it was a night about as cold as tonight.Maybe colder. It was a quick fight too.I didn't see the start of it.
[05:47.12]Then they came fighting out of the door of The Index.Blackie, him that's Blindy now,and this other boy Wille Sawyer
[05:56.21]and they were slugging and kneeing and gouging and biting and I see one of Blackie's eyes hanging down on his cheek.
[06:03.28]They were fighting on the ice of the road with the snow all banked up and the light from this door and The Index door,
[06:11.44]and Hollis Sand was right behind Willie Sawyer who was gouging for the eye and Hollis kept hollering,
[06:18.78]'Bite it off!Bite if off just like it was a grape!'Blackie was biting onto Willie Sawyer's face
[06:27.21]and he had a good pull and it gave away with a jerk and then he had another good pull
[06:35.78]and they were down on the ice now and Willie Sawyer was gouging him to make him let go
[06:42.26]and then Blackie gave a yell like you've never heard.Worse than when they cut a boar."
[06:49.13]Blindy had come up opposite us and we smelled him and turned around,
[06:55.09]Bite it off just like it was a grape,he said in his high-pitched voice and looked at us ,moving his head up and down
[07:04.15]That was the left eye.He got the other one without no advice. Then he stomped me when I couldn't see.
[07:11.83]That was the bad part."He patted himself.
[07:16.92]"I cold fight good then,"he said. "But he got the eye before I knew even what was happening.
[07:23.35]He got it with a lucky gouge.Well,"Blindy said without any ill feeling,"that put a stop to my fighting days."
    [07:33.07]"Give Blackie a drink,"I said to Frank.
[07:36.72]Blindy's the name,Tom.I earned that nameYou seen me earn itThat's the same fellow who put me adrift down the road tonight
[07:45.14]Fellow bit the eye.We ain't never made friends."
[07:50.15]"What did you do to him?"the stranger asked.
[07:54.70]"Oh, you'll see him around,"Blindy said. "You'll recognize him any time you see him.I'll let it come as a surprise."
[08:03.19]"You don't want to see him,"I told the stranger.
[08:07.86]You know that's noe of the reasons I'd like to see sometimes,Blindy said.I'd like to just have one good look at him
[08:16.27]"You know what he looks like,"Frank told him. "You went up and put your hands on his face once."
[08:22.99]"Did it again tonight too,"Blindy said happily. "That's why he put me out of the car.
[08:30.07]He ain't got no sense of humor at all.(4)I told him on a cold night like this he'd ought to bundle up
[08:38.71]so the whole inside of his face wouldn't catch cold.He didn't even think that was funny.
[08:45.51]You know that Willie Sawyer he'll never be a man of the world."
[08:51.25]"Blackie,you have one on the house,"Frank said. "I can't drive you home because I only live just down the road.
