某一天我遇到外教Tim，他急匆匆地赶去了图书馆，他说"I'm gonna hit the books."我一听，怎么？你要去撞书？我就赶紧拦下了他，忙问：“What's wrong with you? Are you gonna hurt yourself?”（你怎么了？你会自伤自己吗？）Tim急忙解释说，"I mean I have to study hard because my finals are coming up."哦，原来如此啊，他说他要用功学习了，因为他的期末考试快来了。
 
这时候我才知道，hit the books有这个意思：
study hard and read a lot about something。
有点中国文化中的“凿壁偷光”、“悬梁刺股”的味道。hit the books就是指“用功读书，读很多东西”的意思。你想啊，都跟书碰到了，那说明看得非常仔细和认真啊。
注意，hit的过去式和过去分词都是hit。而hitting则需要双写t+ing。
 
这个短语也可以用pound the books来替代。
pound作名词时，表示“磅”，谐音记忆：它的发音有点类似“胖的”。而作为动词则有表示“撞击”的意思，英文释义是to hit sth/sb hard many times, especially in a way that makes a lot of noise反复击打；连续砰砰地猛击。
 
举几个例子：
1、I have to hit the books, otherwise I have to fail in the finals.
我必须用功读书，否则我期末考试一定会不及格。
