1.除了一般过去时，还有另外几个过去时态：
l)过去进行时：表示过去某时正在进行的动作：
Last week she wasn't feeling very well.
上星期她感到不太舒服。
An old lady was waiting for the bus.
一位老太太(这时)正在等车。
The sun was setting.
太阳正在西沉。
Birds were singing in the trees.
树间鸟儿在鸣叫。
2)过去完成时表示过去某时前已经发生的事：
When I saw him, he had been ill for a month.
我见到他时他已病了一个月了。
He couldn't see anyone.The thieves had gone.
他没看见什么人，小偷已经跑了。
He showed me the books he had bought.
他让我看了他买的书。
She explained what had happened.
她解释了发生的情况。
3)过去将来时：表示从过去看将要发生的事：
He was eighteen. In two years he would be twenty.
他十八岁，再过两年他就二十了。
I thought you would wait for me.
我以为你会等我哩。
Did you know Mary would come?
你知道玛丽会来吗?
He assured me that he would support us.
他向我保证他会支持我们。
过去将来时除了使用would以外，还可以使用was/were going to表示：
I was going to the library when you called me.
当你打电话给我的时候我正要去图书馆。
这三个时态都常用在宾语从句(a)或间接引语(b)中：
a. He told me that he was writing a novel.
他告诉我他在写一本小说。
She said that she had got everything ready.
她说她把一切都准备好了。
Mother asked when I would be back.
妈问我什么时候回来。
b. He said he was calling from the airport.(比较: I'm calling from the airport.)
She said she just got my fax.(比较: I've got your fax.)
I said I'd be with them right away.(比较: I'll be with you right away.)
would构成的谓语有时表示过去习惯性动作或倾向：
Every Saturday they would go to the club.
每星期六他们都去俱乐部。
Sometimes we would sit together chatting.
有时我们会坐在一起聊天。
The door wouldn't open.
门开不了啦。
The car wouldn't start.
汽车开不动了。
