What is that promise?
那么，美国的承诺是什么?
It's a promise that says each of us has the freedom make of our own lives what we will, but that we also have the obligation to treat each other with dignity and respect.
我们承诺每个人都能自由地过上自己想要的生活，但是我们也有责任尊重他人。
It's a promise that says the market should reward drive innovation and generate growth, but that businesses should live up to their responsibilities to create American jobs, to look out for American workers, and play by the rules of the road.
我们承诺市场将会鼓励勤奋和创新并保证经济持续增长，但是企业有责任为美国人创造工作机会，保障工人权利和遵守规则。
Ours is a promise that says government cannot solve all our problems, but what it should do is that which we cannot do for ourselves——protect us from harm and provide every child a decent education; keep our water clean and our toys safe; invest in new schools and new roads and science and technology.
我们承诺虽然政府不能解决所有的问题，但是政府应该做的是我们自己无法做到的——保护我们不受伤害，让每个孩子都有接受教育的机会;保证我们喝上清洁的水，保证我们孩子的玩具安全;投资建设新的学校，新的道路，以及科技的发展。
Our government should work for us, not against us. It should help us, not hurt us. It should ensure opportunity not just for those with the most money and influence, but for every American who's willing to work.
我们的政府应该为我们服务，而不是与我们作对。政府应该帮助我们，而不是伤害我们。政府应该保证机会不仅仅属于那些有权或有钱的人，还属于每一个勤奋的美国人。
That's the promise of America——the idea that we are responsible for ourselves, but that we also rise or fall as one nation; the fundamental belief that I am my brother's keeper; I am my sister's keeper.
这就是美国的承诺——我们每个人都要为自己负起责任，但我们也是一个同甘共苦的集体;我们会关爱我们的兄弟姐妹，关爱每个人，这是美国的基本信仰。
