英语文章中常见一组同义词集中出现或交替使用。其主要目的是使文章在词汇层面上有所变化，而不致过于单调呆板。当然有时是词组中搭配的需要，即在某一语境中，必须使用这个词，而不是别的什么词。在我们所选的这篇文章中，我们注意到两组同义词组，其中一组同义词是出现在同一语境中，另一组同义词是在全文中交替出现。

　　我们先说“power”、“clout”和“might”这三个同义词，它们同时出现在一个句子里，即“For all its military power, political clout and economic might, America could be losing its influence in what is arguably the most dynamic region of the world.”我们比较它们的定义和例句，以从中揣摩它们之间细微的区别。

　　Power: Strength or force, might, military strength, state having international influence, especially based on military strength. 例句：we plan to increase our air power.

　　Clout: Power and influence over the people or events. 例句：So who wields the clout (=has the power) in this organization? The Queen may have principles but she has no real political clout.

　　Might: Power, strength or force. 例句：Pizarro defeated the might of the Inca Empire with only a few hundred men. She struggled with all her might to free herself from under the car.

　　从上面的定义可以看出，“power”、“clout”和“might”这三个词的基本意思都是“strength”(“力量”)。在把它们翻译成中文的时候，我们可以试图使用不同的中文词组，也可以使用同一个词组。这主要是看修辞的需要，我们此处的译文使用了“实力”同一个词组与军事、政治和经济搭配。在汉语里这样做，是为了避免使用同义词而其区别意义不大时，索性使用同一个词代之，使行文简洁。
