pull the plug

Plug是指电源线末端与插座连接的部分，也就是“插头”。因此，pull the plug的字面意思就是拔掉某个东西的插头。把某个需要电的设备的插头拔了下来，不就等于中断或者切断了这个设备的源头了么。事实上这个短语在使用中也有这样一层含义，表示“制止，阻止(某事继续);釜底抽薪(尤指停止资助或支持)”。

A: Our department might not exist for much longer.
