active duty

这是一个起源于19世纪早期的军事术语。Active duty是指现役军人。Reserve members指的是那些应征入伍但目前没有服役的人，翻译成“预备役。随着时间的推移，人们开始偶尔用这个表达来指从事某项全职工作的人，不管是不是军人。

A: Are you graduating at the end of this year?

B: Yes! I’m finally graduating 7 years after starting college!

A: Wow. I didn’t realize you were here for that long.
