    Unit 4

    Section I

    Task 1

Felipe: Hey! What are you guys doing?

Andrea: We’re playing Fun Facts. Come and join us.

Mandy: OK, Andrea. It’s your turn. The moon is bigger than the sun. True or false?

Andrea: That’s easy. It’s false. The moon is smaller than the sun.

Mandy: Right. That’s five points for you.

Andrea: This one’s for you, Felipe. Which is warmer, the North Pole or the South

    Pole?

Felipe: I think the South Pole is warmer.

Andrea: No, sorry. That’s wrong. The North Pole is warmer than the South Pole.

    Task 2

Josh: Hey, Andrea. Look at the poster. Are you going to do anything for the

    fundraiser?

Andrea: Yeah. I’m going to do yard work.

Josh: Really? Is Luigi going to do yard work, too?

Andrea: No, he isn’t. He’s going to wash windows. How about you? Are you going to

    sign up for anything?

Josh: I’m going to sign up, but I’m not going to wash windows! I’m not going to do

yard work, either. It’s too much work.

Andrea: Are you going to walk dogs? That sounds easy.

Josh: No, I’m not. I’d like to babysit or work at the bake sale.

Andrea: Well, I think you should work at the bake sale. Babysitting is hard work.

    Task 3

Andrea: Hi, Felipe. How was your break? Was it exciting?

Felipe: Yeah, very. I went to a dude ranch with my friends.

Andrea: Cool! Were you there all week?

    Felipe: Yes, I was.

Andrea: Was it a big ranch?

Felipe: No, it wasn’t, but I was never bored. We rode horses every day and had

campfires every night. What about your break? Was it fun?

Andrea: Yes, it was terrific. I went to New York with my family.

Felipe: Great! . . . Oh, no! The bell’s ringing. We have to go to class. Let’s talk more

    later.

    Section II

    Task 1

Alex: Are you going on vacation this year?

Carly: Yes, I am. We're going to Hawaii.

Nick: Oh, I've been to Hawaii. This is me on vacation in Hawaii, in the pool.

Alex: Cool, that looks fun. What was it like?

Nick: It was great. We went swimming every day.

Carly: Have you been to Greece?

Alex: Yes. We went there last year.

Carly: Oh, really, what was it like?

Alex: It was really hot. We went to the beach a lot and I learnt how to dive.

    Nick: Cool.

Alex: Look, this is me with my friend.

Nick: Wow, that sounds so fun.

    Carly: Have you been skiing?

Nick: Yes, I have. I went skiing in Canada. I also went skating. This is me in Canada

    on skates.

Carly: Did you fall over a lot?

    Nick: I did at first.

Carly: I've been skiing, too. This is me with my family, in France.

    Alex: Wow. Cool.

Nick: Have you ever been to Africa?

Alex: Yes, I've been to Morocco. That's me with my dad, in the Atlas Mountains.

Carly: I've been to South Africa.

    Nick: What's South Africa like?

Carly: It's really fun and interesting. We went on safari and saw lots of wild animals.

    Nick and Alex: Wow!

    Task 2

    Andy: Are you OK?

Charlotte: (Sniffs and blows her nose)

    Andy: Hey, what's wrong?

    Charlotte: Nothing. (Sniffs)

Andy: It must be something. Is there anything I can help?

Charlotte: Well . . . You know that guy I met at the party the other week?

Andy: The one you said was really nice?

Charlotte: Well, he's not such a nice guy anymore. He's dumped me. (Sniffs) We

seemed good together—we had great fun—we planned to go out tonight and then he

rang and . . . said he didn't want to see me anymore.

Andy: I know how you feel. The same thing happened to me, remember when

Rebecca dumped me, by text? Look. I'm sorry. Don't cry.

Charlotte: Just when I thought I'd found Mr. Right.

    Andy: I'm really sorry.

Charlotte: What a nightmare. And I've just blown loads of cash on this new dress

    which I can't return . . . I'm completely broke now.

Andy: Oh, that's terrible. I really feel for you. Look, I can always lend you a few

    quid . . .

Charlotte: Thanks. So, the same thing happened to you, didn’t it?

Andy: Yeah, a couple of weeks ago, I thought she was “The One”, as well.

Charlotte: Looks like we're both in the same boat.

Andy: Why don't we go out to the cinema, my treat.

Charlotte: Are you sure? I thought you were broke, too?

Andy: What the hell! Life's too short to be miserable.

Charlotte: Thanks. I’ll just fix my face.

    Andy: Right.

    Richard: Going out?

    Andy: Yes.

Richard: Can I come along, too?

    Section III

One thing I used to do is make dinner. I’d prepare all the vegetables and cook a

big meal every night. But I’m just too tired these days, and I don’t have time. I mean,

it’s six o’clock by the time I get home. So now I just throw a frozen dinner in the

microwave, and it’s ready in five minutes. Actually, I think the kids prefer it to my

    cooking.
