703　wait和await

① wait多用于口语，常作不及物动词，结构为：wait for sb./sth.，wait for sb./sth. to do sth.。wait后还可接不定式，也可接由till，until引导的从句。

Time and tide wait for no man. 岁月不待人。

She is waiting for him to call. 她在等他的电话。

He is waiting to have a word with you. 他在等着同你说句话。

② wait也可用作及物动词，意为“期待，静待”。

He has waited his turn for three hours. 他已经等了三个小时。（for three hours作状语）

They are waiting supper for him. 他们在等他吃晚饭。

③ await是正式用语，及物动词，意为“等候，等待着，准备以待”，后跟名词、代词或动名词。

He is eagerly awaiting hearing from you. 他热切地等待着你的来信。

A surprise awaited her on her arrival. 她到达时大吃一惊。

I am awaiting your reply. 我正等候你的答复。
