在形容词最高级前，通常用定冠词the来修饰。例如：The Sahara is the biggest desert in the world.（撒哈拉沙漠是世界上最大的沙漠。）如果most前面没有the，就不表示最高级的含义，而只是表示“非常”，相当于“very”。

形容词的最高级，可以用by far, far, much, mostly, almost等修饰。例如：This hat is nearly/almost the biggest.不过要注意的是：very可修饰最高级，但位置与much不同。比如：This is the very best./This is much the best.而序数词通常只修饰最高级。例如：Africa is the second largest continent.

形容词最高级的意义，有时可以用比较级表示出来。例如：Mike is more intelligent than any other students in his class.（马克是班上最聪明的。）此外，“否定词语＋比较级”“否定词语＋so...as”结构也可以表示最高级含义。例如：Nothing is so easy as this. =Nothing is easier than this. =This is the easiest thing.（没有比这更简单的了。）

当形容词的最高级只用作表语时，定冠词the可以省略。例如：I think her plan is best.（我认为她的计划最好。）而且，形容词最高级前可以加a或不加冠词来表示“非常……”。比如：He has been most kind to me./We were all most anxious to go home.

英文知识——Learn from somebody

有人把“我不会学你，因为我不像你有那么多钱”译成“I won't learn from you, as I don't have as much money as you do.”这是不对的，因为错用了“learn from”。英文中的learn from是“学习某人的优点、经验、技术知识”或“吸取某种经验、教训”。而“我学你”是指“在某种行为上学你的样子”或“我效仿你”的意思。正确的表达是follow one's example或follow suit.
