ix. 关系副词 when, where
1. 先行词指时间并在从句中作时间状语时，用when引导从句。when=in/at/on which。
We'll never forget the day when/on which we attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
我们永远也忘不了参加奥运会开幕式的那一天。
I still remember the day five weeks ago when we fought each other.
我仍然记得五周前我们打架的那一天。
2. 当先行词是表示时间的名词，但在从句中作动词remember, spend, take, forget等动词的宾语时，用that或which引导从句。
My birthday is a day that I'll never forget.
我的生日是我永远也不会忘记的日子。
3. 先行词指地点并在从句中作地点状语时，用where引导从句。where=in/at/on which。
We all want to visit the place where/in which Shanghai Expo was held.
我们都想去参观上海举办世博会的地方。
This is the hotel where/in which we stayed last night.
这就是我们昨天夜里住过的那家宾馆。
4. 当先行词是表示地点的名词，但在从句中作动词visit, forget, remember, build等动词的宾语时，用that或which而不用where。
This is the house where he was born.
这就是他出生的那座房子。
This is the house that he built last year.
这就是他去年建的房子。
5. 当先行词是case, situation, circumstance等名词，表示从句主语处于某种状况、境地或阶段时，用where引导从句。
It's helpful to put children in a situation where they can see themselves differently.
把孩子们放在他们能不同地看到自己的环境中很有帮助。
I can think of many cases where students obviously knew a lot of English words and expressions but couldn't write a good essay.
我能想出很多情况，在此情况下学生们很明显懂得很多英语词汇和短语，却不能写出一篇好文章。
